課程概述

Beginning with the Foucauldian concept of biopower, this course provides a structured approach to the investigation of queer subjects under biopolitical and necropolitical governance. As contemporary scholars of the field have developed extensive reformulation and reinterpretation of the concept, seminal works by Giorgio Agamben, Judith Butler, Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri, and Achille Mbembe will be examined in order to trace the paradigm shift from a modern biopolitical sovereignty to a postmodern regime comprising both biopower and necropower. The final weeks of this course will concentrate on several critical issues to explore how state power, as a ubiquitous and immanent force, has been increasingly manifest through the management of not only the life but the death of queer subjects.

It is expected that the seminar will allow the student to develop a sophisticated understanding of the functions and deployment of contemporary government power, and to equip the student with additional critical capabilities required to undertake advanced thesis work.
